The Most Common Septic System Issues

There are a couple of common septic system issues that all homeowners will encounter at least once in their lifetimes. However, these issues can’t be addressed by a DIYer. Instead, you’ll need to call professionals like us to diagnose and fix them.

Overloading: This occurs when the septic system is used excessively and cannot properly process and treat the wastewater. This can lead to backups, overflow, and damage to the system.

Clogging: Septic systems can become clogged due to various factors, including grease, oil, and non-biodegradable materials being disposed of in the system. This can lead to slow drainage and backups.

Leaking: Septic systems can develop leaks due to age, damage, or poor maintenance. These leaks can allow untreated wastewater to seep into the environment, potentially contaminating nearby soil and water sources.

Biological imbalances: The bacteria in the septic system play a crucial role in breaking down the wastewater. If the balance of bacteria is disrupted, the system may not function properly, leading to issues such as odors and slow drainage. That’s when you need to call our sewer services right away.

Septic tank failure: Septic tanks can fail due to age, damage, or a lack of maintenance.

When a septic tank fails, it can lead to various problems, including backups and overflow. In this case, you will need to call septic tank contractors to get the septic tank pumped.

It is essential to have regular maintenance performed on your septic system to prevent these issues and ensure that it is functioning correctly. Usually, timely and early diagnosis of the problem ensures that it does not become a costly nightmare later.

Signs of Septic Tank and System Failure

Some of the most common signs of septic failure include but may not be limited to:

· Water pooling in your backyard
· The sewage backs up into your toilets, sinks, and other places
· You smell rotten eggs
· You notice a green spongy grass-like substance on your septic tank
· The water drains slowly from the sinks, toilets, and other places
· The trees and shrubs near the tank are causing it to crack or are cracking the pipes

If you notice any of these issues, it is imperative to call septic system experts like us for a thorough diagnosis and to address the problem.

The Process of Installing A New Septic System

We follow a tried-and-true process of installing septic systems. The septic installation process we follow has been developed over the years and found to be optimal both in terms of the outcome and helping to minimize costs.

Getting a permit

Before our team can provide you with a quote, we need to get permits from the County Health Department. This is done after the County has determined the soil and waste water drainage, which helps us decide which system will work for your home. Usually, the choice of a system is based on the results from soil analysis, and the county may help determine the size of the system. However, the size of the system will also depend on the size of your home and the number of bedrooms.

Installation

During a brand-new installation, we will start by excavating the land to make room for the new system. Space will need to be created for the Distribution box, Septic tank, Access hatch, and Sewer pipe. Once all of that is installed, wastewater will flow through each of these parts, which is why they need to be sealed.

The solids will go into the septic tank, and the liquids will be sent into the distribution box. Our team will also dig test pits to determine how the topography will affect reabsorption to help prevent pooling. Once this has been completed, which takes around a week, we can move on to inspection.

The Inspection Stage

During the inspection stage, a county representative will inspect the system to ensure it is up to code. After the system passes inspection, the process is deemed complete, and we can continue to maintain the system for you.

Maintenance

All septic systems require maintenance like septic tank cleaning to ensure that they last the longest possible time without trouble. It is imperative to periodically check the subterranean tank to ensure that the water is draining adequately and check the drain field.

The tank also needs to be pumped every three to five years to clean out all the solids so that the system continues to function smoothly. The sewer line also needs to be checked for issues that can lead to more complex septic problems if not addressed in time.

If you notice signs of the septic system not performing as it should, call us, and we will be happy to diagnose and fix the issue.
